COMMON PROBLEMS WITH ELECTRONIC FILES

Saving a File in the Wrong Version of an Application
You have the latest and greatest application out there. But, if we can't open it, it isn't the greatest anymore. Make sure you check the versions we have available and save your document in a version we can use.

Failure to include all fonts with your job

MAC users: Please send both the printer and screen fonts with your job.
PC users: PDF your file and embed all fonts or provide us with a hard copy with font usage well marked throughout the document. DO NOT SEND US YOUR FONTS. We can not install them.

Use of RGB vs. CMYK
RGB refers to the primary colors of the visible spectrum, RED, GREEN, and BLUE, that are used in monitors, television screens, digital cameras and scanners.
When you scan an image or take a digital picture the image is read by the hardware as RGB color. Often, these images are left in the RGB color mode. Graphic software often has the ability of transferring your image from RGB to CMYK, the colors used in the offset printing process. We recommend you use a graphics software package to convert images to CMYK prior to submission for process color printing. When images are left for us to convert after they have been scanned, often there is a noticeable color shift that differs from the originally intended color. Also, any colors created in page-layout software should be CMYK colors.
The printing process at Sunrise Printing and Publishing uses the CMYK printing process. Our presses print "full color" using the colors: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. Images can not be printed until they are converted to CMYK.

Missing Scans or Image Files
We frequently receive Quark and Pagemaker files without the linked graphic files and must delay the job while we wait for these files to be sent.

File Renaming after an Image or Graphic has been Placed
The image will show up as missing and we are left to try and guess which file we need to link to.

Improperly Labeled Files
File naming is very important especially if we have to convert a file from the PC platform to the MAC platform. If a file is named improperly, the MAC might not be able to recognize what file type it is and render it unusable. Please see file naming recommendations to insure cross-platform compatability.

Unusable Scans/Digital Images
Low resolution - images that are found on the internet, pictures taken on a digital camera at its lowest setting and scans made with too low resolution will result in very poor quality when printed. Please see our section on image preparation for additional information on resolution and proper image preparation to achieve the best quality printing.
High Resolution - the second biggest mistake is that files can get very bloated when images are scanned at a much higher resolution than is needed for the job. Scan at 100% of size and resolution needed. This will keep file transfer and output times from becoming excessive in order to print your job.

Resizing/Rotating Artwork in Page Layout Program
Please send all artwork at 100% size and rotate images as needed before importing them into your page layout program. Resizing/rotating images in page layout programs greatly increase the RIP time to print your job.

PDF Documents Created with Improper Job Options
A PDF (portable document format) document is platform independent and used frequently to create a pre-press document. However , there are a number of inherent problems with PDF file creation. A PDF file can be made in many different ways with a variety of software applications. Often the software used for creating a PDF file will not provide the options necessary for saving a document that is PRINT-READY. A PDF file created for screen viewing most likely will be unsuitable for high resolution printing and CMYK output. A PDF file which is created without the fonts embedded is unusable for printing purposes. Please see our suggestions for PDF creation (see PDF files) and our PDF job option requirements.
